Dow was graduated from Harvard College in 1769. He arrived in Haverhill, N.H. in 1779, where he served as town clerk, moderator, selectman, and sealer of weights and measures. He was also the first (?) postmaster in Haverhill. In addition to his responsibilities to the town, he held a commission as brigadier general in the New Hampshire militia.
